• The aperture for either a door or door & frame should be measured by whomever is going to undertake the installation to avoid complications at fitting stage.
• When fitting a solid oak door it is important to ensure that hinges are suitably robust. A typical door will weigh approximately 60 - 80kg depending upon size and design.
• In order to be fully weatherproof, doors may require a 'Stormguard' Cill (a brass & rubber sealing bar which fixes to the base of the frame). This will depend upon the design of the door and style of frame. You should check this at the time of ordering any door.
• Oak is a natural product, and even the most well made and stable external doors made from it should be expected to move slightly in response to changes in humidity and temparature. In the long term, this movement is likely to be minimal and barely noticeable, but in the short term (after the first winter) minor adjustment may be required to take account of 'settling in' movement.
• It is crucial to seal external oak doors immediately after fitting on both sides with a product suitable for external use. Do not seal only the outside. In order to protect timber from moisture, it is important that the sealing product is re-applied regularly and does not become 'bare'. Follow manufacturers recommendations for re-application guidelines.
• For a 'natural' seal which will enable the oak to age and silver while protecting it from the elements, use OS Clear Oil. For an oil based seal which will enhance and maintain the ' golden' colour of the oak, use Sikkens.
