• If you are fitting a timber border to the Byron squares, you will need to cut the last frame pieces to leave space for this. Once all the frames are fitted, fix the border like the frame, using screws approximately every 400mm (ensuring that there are screws at the ends of each board)
• Once the frame and border is fitted, fix a plug into each screw hole using a suitable wood glue. Once the glue has dried, chip the tops off the plugs flush with the frame using a sharp chisel and a hammer (in the direction of the grain).,
• Sand the frames using a hand held belt sander so that the top surface is smooth (80 grit then 120 grit paper)
• Apply 2 coats of OS Hardwax Oil to the frames, ensuring that the first coat is fully dry before applying the second.
• Fix the tiles into the frames with suitable tile adhesive (Timberfix if you are fitting to a timber sub-floor, otherwise a ceramic adhesive). Allow the adhesive to dry fully before walking on the tiles.
• Apply 2 thin coats of boiled linseed oil mixed 1:1 with turpentine to the surface of the tiles, allowing each coat to dry fully. This will darken the tiles and protect them from absorbing too much of the colour from the grout.
• Grout the tiles, a small area at a time, using a suitable rubberised cement grout - this can be ready made (we recommend Timberfix) or mixed on site.
• Spread the grout across the tiles as well as the joints as the grout will colour the tiles and give them an ‘aged’ look. It should not be left too long on their surface before being cleaned though, as otherwise it will ‘dry’ and be difficult to clean off, so do not be tempted to grout large areas of the floor in one go. Clean each area carefully before moving on to the next.
• To finally seal the floor, use a further 2 coats of OS Hardwax Oil across both tiles and timber. Ensure that you allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next.
• Should you wish to ‘age’ the tiles further, you can at this point apply Black Bison Paste. This will darken the surface of the tiles and give more of an ‘aged’ look.
Note: Do not wash or buff the floor for 7 days to allow the waxoil to cure fully.
