Different Timbers
Many
timbers are used to make flooring. We have chosen to specialise in Oak as we believe it to be one of the best and because it is
a timber indigenous to the UK and ideally suited to our climate and architectural styles. This is why it remains
one of the most traditional and popular timbers used for flooring in this country.
The Oak we supply is primarily from France; The generic name for this species is Quercus
Robur or
Petraea.
We
do not stock American Oak which is not only less durable but also does not
have the depth of character and figure of its European
counterpart.
Solid floorboards are also available in many other timbers, offering a spectrum
of natural colours and a range of different styles. The most interesting include
Chestnut, Maple, Teak, Walnut and Merbau, all of which are included in our
range and like our Oak are sourced from responsibly managed forests.
Each timber has its own particular pros and cons - as well as looking different
some are more or less suitable for certain environments,
uses or methods of installation. Please use the flooring selector in our brochure, or check with our experienced staff that the particular type
of wood flooring is suitable for the room you wish to put it in and the way
in which you wish to fix it.
