Fixing Issues

Batons

If you wish to nail fix your floor but currently have a concrete sub-floor, you will first need to fix softwood batons onto the concrete.

In the event that a screed has not been laid these can be used instead reducing cost and drying time (see Concrete)

When fixing your batons to the concrete you should ensure that they are at 90° to the direction in which you wish the floorboards to run.

Batons should be at least 20mm x 50mm in order to allow sufficient fixing for the nails and will need to be set at 400mm centres to prevent the floor ‘bouncing’. Larger batons can be used but smaller ones should not be.

.It is essential that the batons used are completely dry. If they are not, the moisture in them is quite likely to be absorbed by the dry timber flooring and this could cause the boards to cup. If you are in doubt, these should be tested with a humidity meter.

Should you wish, you can insulate between the batons; vermiculite insulation is ideal for this purpose.
