Finishing your floor
Lacquer Finishes
A lacquer or varnish
is a hard finish applied with a brush or roller after sanding. It
forms a surface upon the timber, and acts as a protective barrier.
Although typically thought of as high-gloss
finishes, this is not necessarily the case. There are a number of more matt options such as Bonakemi Spectra or Mega Matt or Silk Matt and Bonakemi Traffic (which of these is most suitable will depend on anticipated levels of wear).
Hard finishes are harder to damage in the short term and
more work to repair in the long term than their soft conterparts (waxes or oils):
Good quality lacquers are typically very durable, but once damaged or worn they are not easy to locally repair. There are a number of products on the market (such as Bonakemi 'Freshen Up') which can be used to treat small scratches and to perk up a tired surface, as well as to treat more substantial scratches and wear(such as Bonakemi Parkett Polish) but the whole floor will need to be sanded back and resealed. Depending on the product and the level of traffic across the floor, this will be necessary approximately every 5 - 10 years.
